Orava Castle is one of the most visited castles in Slovakia. It forms a significant landmark of the Orava region, which was the scene of many historical events. Currently, it is the center of interest for domestic and foreign tourists. Thanks to its well-preserved condition, it is often chosen by the creators of films and fairy tales. Oravský hrad is located in the village of Oravský Podzámok in a strategically important place. In the past, its role was to protect the Hungarian-Polish road, later it became a county castle. The foundations of its majestic pillars, which proudly rise above the Orava River, were already laid in the middle of the 13th century. However, the castle wall was already inhabited in prehistoric times. During its rich history, Orava Castle has undergone several reconstructions. The most extensive of them took place during the time of the Thurz family, when there was a vibrant social and military life. Today, the castle complex has 154 rooms. It consists of a complex of Lower, Middle and Upper Castles with palaces and fortifications and towers. Orava Castle tours are divided into three circuits. During your visit, you can admire its exterior architecture and interior, which bears the features of several styles: Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and modern styles. During the main tourist season, various events are organized at the castle, which you should definitely not miss. Night tours complete with theater performances, events for children and art exhibitions are very popular.
