The Gabčíkovo waterworks was built between 1977 and 1992 on the second longest European river, the Danube. Its goal is to protect the adjacent territory from floods, improve navigation conditions, ensure the quality of drinking water and the production of electricity. The silhouette of its dominant feature, which is the watchtower, will draw your attention to the Gabčíkovo Waterworks from afar. In its lower part, there is a viewing platform from which you will have an excellent view not only of the immediate surroundings. If you visit Vodné dielo Gabčíkovo in good weather, you can see as far as the Kamzík TV tower with binoculars. During construction, emphasis was also placed on recreational and tourist use. During sightseeing cruises by private boat from Gabčíkovo or from Bratislava, you can admire the natural beauty of the Danube and nearby towns. Cycling lovers will also enjoy themselves. Around the Gabčíkovo Waterworks, you can plan a cycling trip with a start and end in the capital. The entire route is about 100 km long. You can prepare for a high-quality surface — it leads along an asphalt road. When you visit Vodné dielo Gabčíkovo, do not go around the island between the old bed of the Danube, the inlet and outlet channels. Three villages lie on it. There is also a bus service to the village of Vojka in the summer. The island will win you over with its beauty. You can admire the beautiful flora, the banks of the old riverbed of the Danube offer enjoyment for boaters.
