Description of the attraction

Cathedral of St. Martina, also known as the Cathedral of St. Martina, is an iconic sacral building in Bratislava. It stands on Rudnay Square and is the largest, oldest and most important temple in the city. Together with Bratislava Castle, it belongs to the most sought-after local historical monuments. Dóm sv. During the past centuries, Martina was the center of not only church, but also cultural and social events. Its most famous period was the years 1563-1830, when the Cathedral of St. Martin's coronation temple of the Kingdom of Hungary. During this period, as many as 11 kings were crowned here. One of them was the well-known queen Mária Terézia. Dóm sv. During its rich history, Martina has undergone several major and minor transformations and reconstructions. It acquired its current form in 1877. There are several chapels inside. The most artistically valuable is the chapel of St. Ján Almuznik. There is also a crypt under it, in which the remains of Archbishop Eszterházy are kept. The most striking architectural element is the tower of the cathedral, which reaches a height of up to 85 meters. At its top is a copy of the crown of Saint Stephen, which is a symbol of the important coronation temple. In the past, the Cathedral of St. Martina part of the city fortifications, therefore it also served as a bastion. Dóm sv. Martina has an equally interesting interior, which is decorated with remarkable works by prominent artists. When visiting the temple, the statue of St. Martin on a horse cast in lead. Important church dignitaries, nobles and artists were buried in the catacombs of the cathedral.
