Kalvária v Banskej Štiavnici
Description of the attraction
The Banskoštiavnica Calvary is visible from almost every point in the city. This place belongs to the inseparable elements of the country. It is located on a hill above Banská Štiavnica. Calvary in Banská Štiavnica is a complex of sacral buildings that were built in the Baroque style. It consists of three churches, nineteen chapels and a statue of the Virgin Mary. Banská Štiavnica calvary was built in 1751. Its status was due to the order of the Jesuits with the aim of bringing to life the events of Jesus' Passion on the cross. The Calvary in Banská Štiavnica served the faithful for two centuries, but from 1951 it gradually began to deteriorate. Activists from the Banská Štiavnica'91 Association, Slovak Scouting and the VÚB Foundation were responsible for its restoration. After 11 years, the entire complex was finally restored and could start serving its purpose for five years. The Banskoštiavnica calvary is admired today in its full beauty by domestic and foreign tourists. There are also two permanent exhibitions. In the Lower Church, you will see an exhibition about the history and present of Calvary. In the citadel of Banská Štiavnica's Old Castle, an exhibition of Calvary in the Asylum is prepared for visitors. The tour is possible on your own or with a guide, and you can choose a short or long circuit. You can walk in the area of Banskoštiavnická calvary all year round. The exhibition on Pod Kalváriou Street in the new Information Center is only open during the season. Entry is free.
