Znievsky hrad
Description of the attraction
The Turca area is a location where you will come across several beautiful castle ruins. Znievsky Castle is one of them. Its ruins stand on a high limestone cliff above the village of Kláštor pod Znievom. The ruins of Zniew Castle in Turčianska Kotlina are also among the highest. Therefore, pack a dose of fitness in your backpack for the trip. Znievsky Castle was built after the Turkish invasions by King Bel IV. Its main task was to protect the entrance to Turca along the trade route leading from Ponitrius. The castle also served as the first seat of the Turkish throne. It was later moved to the more easily accessible and larger Sklabin Castle. In 1681, Znievsky Castle was burned down by Tököli's insurgents. It has not been reconstructed since those times. Only the remains of a square tower and the foundations of one of the residential buildings have been preserved from the once massive building. Thanks to the amazing view of the surroundings, the ruins of Zniew Castle are a popular place among tourists. You can reach it on foot from the village following the green sign. The hiking trail is approximately 4 km long, you should be able to complete the journey in 1 hour. 15 min.
