Description of the attraction
The Vinian castle near the village of Vinné was built in the Gothic style, probably in the second half of the 13th century. At that time, it served as one of the guard castles on the trade route leading to Poland. In 1312, it was attacked by the Omodej family and damaged for the first time. Vinian Castle suffered further damage in 1466 during the battles between the Hungarian king Matej and the Polish king Casimir IV. It was repaired at the beginning of the 16th century, when it was also newly fortified. Unfortunately, in 1594 it was damaged again in battle by the imperial army. The owners of the castle at the time — the Sztáray family repaired the castle. After they moved to a mansion in the village from the middle of the 17th century, it was uninhabited. At the beginning of the 18th century, it was demolished by order of the emperor in retaliation for the anti-Habsburg uprising. Since then, only a ruin has stood in the place of its former glory. The ruins of the Vinianske Castle can be reached from the village of Vinné by following the blue tourist sign. From the castle hill you can see the view of the East Slovak Plain. You can see them as far as Michalovce and Zemplínska širava. But that is not the only interesting thing that Vinian Castle offers. An intact vine was discovered in its ruins, the age of which experts estimate to be up to 200 years old. It is probably a very rare and rare variety of Neuburg. Legend has it that its only root in all of Hungary has been preserved at the Vinianske Castle.
