Description of the attraction

The spa community Červený Kláštor is located on the banks of the Dunajec River. This place is sought after for the beauty of the surrounding nature, which you can explore by hiking along marked trails, and the possibility of river rafting. The local exceptional baths, the rich and interesting history of the village are definitely worth mentioning. From the historical places of the village, Červený Kláštor is the most famous national cultural monument — a monastery from the 14th century. It was built in the beautiful Pieniny scenery under the Tri Koruna hill. In the 14th - 16th centuries it served as a Carthusian monastery, in the 18th century as a Camaldol monastery. Kláštor Červený Kláštor became famous mainly thanks to the monk Cyprian, who devoted himself to the cultivation of medicinal herbs and compiled an extensive herbarium. Life in this place reached its peak at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. In the later period, it was burned down by Hussite troops, in 1454 it was attacked by brotherly troops from the nearby camp on Zelena luka. Today you can view its comprehensively reconstructed area. The dominant feature of the place is the Gothic church, on which architectural details have been preserved. A museum open to the public has been set up inside the premises. Here you can get acquainted with the interesting life of the Carthusian and Camaldule monks. The village of Červený Kláštor has other attractions for tourists. There is a healing mineral spring with a characteristic smell of hydrogen sulfide in the spas here. That is why they are called Smerdžonka.
