Description of the attraction

The important mining town of Banská Štiavnica will delight you with its many historical monuments during your visit. Among them, one of the city's oldest architectural monuments — the Old Castle — has an important place. The old castle is located above Námestí sv. Trinity. In the past it served as a church, at the time of the Turkish invasions it was rebuilt into a fortress. Its dominant feature is the originally Gothic castle tower with an underpass. You can also see the chapel of St. Michal, which has two parts: above ground and underground. Bones selected during the digging of new graves were placed in them. The old castle is managed by the Slovak Mining Museum. It offers its visitors several permanent exhibitions: - Archaeological exhibition "Miners are coming..." - From the history of the city of Banská Štiavnica - Model of the altar of Master MS from 1506 - Lapidary - Himmelreich - Shooting targets and historical weapons - Smoking workshop - Baroque sculpture - Reliefs and sculptures from the baroque Calvary of Banská Štiavnica It is open all year round, it is closed to the public only during special events.
