Description of the attraction

Sklabiňa Castle attracts attention from the road leading to Martin. Its ruins lie on the top of a conical hill above the picturesque village of Sklabinský Podzámok. Sklabiňa Castle was built in the middle of the 13th century on the site of an old castle. In the past, it served as a royal castle and seat of the Turkish throne. It was destroyed by fire in 1436, then repaired and later rebuilt and expanded several times. The dominant feature of the castle grounds was a prismatic tower, the ruins of which can be found at the highest point of the rampart. At the beginning of the 17th century, a Renaissance mansion was built in the forecourt. At the end of 1944, the Germans blew it up during a military operation. Sklabiňa Castle was thus burned down again together with Sklabinský Podzámek. To this day, part of the masonry of the chapel with its once magnificent Gothic vaults, parts of the fortifications, towers and palaces, farm buildings, mansions and bastions have been preserved. If you feel like going on a trip there, Sklabin Castle is easily accessible. You can reach it by car. Those who prefer to treat themselves to an easy walk can head to it on foot from the village. The castle also has a museum where you can learn about its history and owners. The castle festivities that take place here every year are also worth a visit.
