Description of the attraction
Morské oko is rightfully one of the sought-after places in Vihorlatské vrchy. This largest lake in the mountain range is also the largest volcanic lake in Slovakia. It has an area of up to 13 ha and a broken coast. The lake has crystal clear water where you can observe abundant aquatic life. Morské oko is an ideal location if you want to relax in nature. It is a wonderful place if you want to go on a romantic walk, thanks to the undemanding terrain it is also visited by families with children. The western and northern banks are covered with sand and have a gentler slope. To the east of the lake, the terrain is more steep and stony. The route leading to Morské oko starts at the access parking lot. A 1 km long path with a slight incline leads from the parking lot. Even children and less skilled tourists can handle it without any problems. A beautiful walk around the lake leads along a forest path through the Vihorlatský forest. Rich flora and fauna live here without the intervention of human hands. Morské Oko also impresses with its view of the dominant feature of the Vihorlat Hills, the Sninský kamen. If you decide to extend your trip and go on it, you will have a breathtaking view of the surrounding hills and valleys. You can get to Sninské kamen with the blue sign from Zemplínské or Remetské Hámry. Lake Morské Oko with the surrounding forest is declared a national nature reserve.
