Kláštorisko
Description of the attraction
The well-known tourist center in Slovak paradise Kláštorisko does not only serve as an intersection of marked paths and a place to rest. The ruins of the Carthusian monastery from the 13th century were discovered at this place. The strategic position of the Monastery was already used by the original inhabitants of Spiš. That's why the fortification grew here from two accessible sides. During the 12th and 13th centuries, a new one gradually grew on the site of the old fortress. The fortification is located in the western part of the rocky massif, which is more accessible. The monastery served people as a refuge during the Tatar attacks. That is why in the past it also got the second name Strážny vrch or Skala útočiska. In the middle of the 13th century, the Monastery was rebuilt by the Spišský Saxons, who built walls on the hill up to 1,000 m long. They built a monastery behind the walls, which served the Carthusian order as its first center. The monastery is now part of the Slovak Paradise. You can find it on the territory of the national park in its central area and you can get here from almost any corner of the Slovak Paradise. When you visit it, don't forget to look around — you'll get a wonderful view of the entire Špiška basin.
