Korňanský ropný prameň
Description of the attraction
The oil spring in the village of Korňa in Kysucie is a European geological unique. It is a spontaneous surface gush of oil accompanied by occasional spurts of self-igniting methane. It was declared a natural monument in 1984. In the oil well, this mineral is concentrated in a small lake with a diameter of 1.5 - 2 m. A wooden triangular structure is built above it, on which the flag of the Slovak Republic flies. Local oil is of very high quality. In the past, local residents used it mainly for heating, lighting and lubrication. There is free access to the spring, you can find it about 150 m from the parking lot by the main road. The village of Korňa is not only famous for its oil spring. Here you can also admire a windmill, typical wooden architecture and the largest linden tree in Kysucie.
