Prielom Hornádu
Description of the attraction
Slovak Paradise National Park is considered one of the most beautiful natural areas in Slovakia. It owes this to its beautiful corners, among which Prielom Hornádu undoubtedly belongs. Prielom Hornádu is a place that attracts many Slovak and foreign tourists. This charming canyon-like valley is 16 km long. This name covers the section of the upper course of the Hornád River from the mouth of Veľká Bielá vody to the village of Smižany. Hornád created a canyon-like valley at this place during millennia of action on the bedrock. It can be passed through the so-called the "Mountain Service" trail. The trail consists of 7 built-in metal bridges and footbridges, for approximately 320 m the passage along the rock walls is secured with chains. The walkway is complemented by 140 risers and 70 m of wooden footbridges. The Hornád Pass attracts with its beauty and a dose of adrenaline. In some sections, tourists walk here on iron steps embedded in the rock directly above the turbulent surface of the water course. Beautiful hiking awaits you in the lower part of the valley, where the 15 km long educational hiking trail leads through Hornádu Pass. You will find 11 information boards on it, thanks to which you will learn many interesting facts about the local fauna, flora and geomorphology. Prielom Hornádu is one of the moderately demanding hikes. A slightly more difficult crossing through the canyon-like part is complemented by a more comfortable hike along the Ihríka lookout ridge. The route is circular, its starting and destination point is the settlement of Podlesok. If you go to Hornád Pass in winter, prepare yourself for the amazing power of the local nature. In the canyon, you can also enjoy a charming view of the play of light that passes through the bluish icicles formed on the river.
