Description of the attraction

The fortress in Komárno will take you to the times of the Tatars in the south of Slovakia. Thanks to its strong and strong walls, this city was able to defend itself against the ravages of the Tatars. As a reminder of these times, one of the largest and most important monuments of its kind in Slovakia can still be found here. The fortress in Komárno was built during two periods. The old fortress was built on the rivers Váh and Danube, the new fortress is also called the Citadel. Both parts are part of the bastion, fort and polygonal system of fortresses. In its heyday, the Komárno fortress was the largest and strongest defensive structure in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Unfortunately, some of its parts were demolished in the first half of the 20th century. Nevertheless, due to its size and preserved condition, it has maintained its status as unique in European format. When visiting the fortress in Komárno, you can also admire Bastion VI., which houses the Roman lapidary. The tour can only be taken with a guide, individual visits are not possible. The central parts of the fortress are used today by the Slovak Army.
