Fiľakovský hrad
Description of the attraction
Fiľakovský Castle is located on top of a rock in the middle of the city. The first written mention of it comes from the 13th century. It mentions that the castle resisted Tatar raids. During its history, Fiľakovský Castle changed owners several times. In the 16th century, it was conquered by Turkish troops, and for almost 40 years it became their headquarters, from which they controlled the surrounding country. It was later recaptured by imperial troops. However, the period of peace did not last long. Fiľakov Castle was besieged several times during the anti-Habsburg uprisings. In the 17th century, during the attack of Imrich Tököly, it burned down and a ruin remained. Fiľakovský castle is today the seat of the castle museum. In it, you can admire exhibitions about its history and the history of the surroundings. The exhibits include rare finds from the Middle Ages and the Turkish occupation of the city. Valuable artifacts from important archaeological sites in the vicinity of Fiľakovo are part of the exhibition. At the castle you can also view the exhibition Monuments of petrified life in the vicinity of Fiľakovo. The collection includes finds from the Paleolithic period, plant prints and invertebrate fossils.
