Chrám sv. Jakuba v Levoči

Description of the attraction

Church of St. Jacob in Levoča is one of the largest Gothic churches in Slovakia. Its rich history dates back to 1263. Chrám sv. Jakub in Levoča, including its interior, has been a national cultural monument since 1965. Visitors can admire the highest Gothic altar in the world, the author of which is the famous late Gothic carver Master Pavol from Levoča. Its dimensions are truly respectable — the height reaches up to 18 meters. The beauty of the altar is complemented by the church's decoration from the 14th and 15th centuries, especially the murals on the wall of the north nave and in the sanctuary of the church. Baroque goldsmith Ján Szilassy's monstrances, chalices and other liturgical objects are also rare works. Chrám sv. Jacob in Levoča was declared a Minor Basilica in 2015. Even today, it is a living temple and serves the faithful daily for religious services. It is therefore necessary to plan his visit outside the liturgical celebrations in the temple. You can find information about opening hours and entrance fees on the website.
