Hrad Devín
Description of the attraction
Devín Castle rises on a high cliff at the strategic point of the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers. This charming castle ruin belongs to the main attractions of Bratislava. Devín castle is, together with Bratislava and Nitra castles, one of the oldest historically documented castles in Slovakia. Thanks to the rich finds, it is considered one of the most important archaeological and historical sites in Central Europe. The Devín Castle was built on a high cliff, which was adapted to its floor plan. Its location predestined it for settlement already in prehistoric times. For this reason, it also later became Rastislav's princely castle and an important Great Moravian defensive fortress. Devín Castle attracts tourists with a beautiful view from the upper castle and the opportunity to learn about its rich history. In this place, the omnipresent and fairy-tale natural scenery literally breathes on you. In the caves of the upper castle, you can view the permanent exhibition Hrad Devín in the 13th - 20th centuries during your visit. Its location in the attractive areas of the rock cliff gives it a special charm. At the Renaissance palace, tourists can admire a memorial plaque commemorating the historical trip of Slovak youth to Devín. It was organized by Ľudovít Štúr in 1836. The Devín Castle is easily accessible by car or by public transport, which runs here from the Devín district of Bratislava. The entrance is through the Western Moravian Gate and you can go here with small children or a stroller. During the season, performances of historical swordsmen or other accompanying events will enrich your stay at the castle. Tourists also have the opportunity to try their hand at ax throwing, javelin or archery.
