Babia hora
Description of the attraction
Babia hora hill is the northernmost viewpoint in Slovakia and at the same time the highest peak in the Oravské Beskydy. This beautiful region in the north of Slovakia also forms the border between two watersheds. Water flows on its northern side in the territory of Poland go to the Baltic Sea. The stream from the southern side flows into the Black Sea. The ascent to Babia hora, whose peak reaches a height of 1724 m, is considered one of the most interesting on Orava. You can go there from the Slaná voda cottage in Oravská Polhora. On the route following the yellow mark, you will have to climb up to 1,000 meters in height. The journey there and back takes approximately 7 hours due to the difficult elevation gain. It is also part of the Slaná voda educational trail. If you want to learn something about the famous Slovak author of Hájnikova's Woman on the way to the ridge, stop at the Hviezdoslavá hajovna. You will be able to view the permanent exhibition here. The Milo Urban memorial house is also located near the game park. The top of Baba Mountain is also accessible from the Polish side, so you will also meet Polish tourists there. Don't forget to dress well for the hike. The rocky peak forms an open space without forest cover and windy weather awaits you there. The ascent is certainly worth all the effort, and you can see a circular view from the top. Towards the south you will see the Orava basin with the Orava water reservoir. You will be able to observe the ridges of the Oravská Magura, the Low Tatras and the Chočské vrchy. Pope John Paul II also liked Mount Babia hora, who visited it many times. Today, his monument is located here. It was built in his honor by the inhabitants of Oravská Polhora, Rabče, Rabčice and Sihelna. On your trip, don't forget to notice the unique flora that makes Babia hora interesting. Prales na Baba Hora is located around its perimeter. In 1926, the Kotlina reservation under Baba Hora, with predominantly blueberry forests and a strip of rhododendron, was declared a protected area.
